Questions to Ask Before Choosing Cosmetic Dental Treatment

The right questions help you make a confident, informed decision. Use this checklist before any cosmetic dental treatment.

By Dr Paul Aesthetic · Published

Cosmetic dental treatment is elective. Unlike treating pain or infection, you have time to understand your options, compare approaches and decide what is right for you. The right questions help you make a confident, informed decision — and help you recognise a careful, patient-centred clinician.

The short answer

Before cosmetic treatment, ask about the dentist's licensing and experience, exactly what will be done and why, less invasive alternatives, risks, how much natural tooth will be affected, how long results last, what maintenance is needed, and what the estimate includes.

About the dentist

  • Is the dentist licensed for practice here? In Dubai, dental practitioners are licensed by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
  • What training and experience do you have in this specific treatment?
  • Will you personally carry out each stage of my treatment?
  • How do you plan cosmetic cases — photographs, scans, mock-ups?

About the plan

  • What exactly will be done, to which teeth, and why?
  • Why are those particular teeth included?
  • Are there less invasive alternatives — whitening, bonding, alignment?
  • What would happen if I did nothing?
  • Can I see a trial mock-up or design before anything irreversible is done?
  • How many appointments will I need, and over what period?

About your teeth and health

  • Are my teeth and gums healthy enough for this treatment now?
  • Do I need any treatment first?
  • Do I grind my teeth, and how will that affect the result?
  • How will my bite be affected?

About risks and limitations

  • How much natural tooth structure will be removed?
  • Is the treatment reversible?
  • What are the common side effects, and what are the rarer, serious risks?
  • What are the limitations — what might not be achievable for my teeth?
  • How might the result differ from the design?

About longevity and maintenance

  • How long can I realistically expect the result to last?
  • What maintenance will I need — reviews, polishing, night guards?
  • What would replacement involve in the future?
  • How should I care for the treatment day to day?

About costs

  • What does the estimate include — planning, temporaries, reviews, night guard?
  • Are there additional costs if extra treatment is needed?
  • What happens if something chips or comes loose soon after treatment?
  • Is any part of the treatment covered by my insurance?

Questions to ask yourself

  • What exactly do I want to change, and why?
  • Am I comfortable with irreversible treatment?
  • Am I prepared for long-term maintenance?
  • Do I feel listened to and unhurried?

Warning signs

Be cautious if you encounter:

  • Pressure to commit on the same day
  • Guaranteed or "perfect" results
  • Extensive treatment recommended without discussion of alternatives
  • Reluctance to answer questions or explain risks
  • Prices that seem to bundle many teeth without individual assessment

Conclusion
